Her mission is to change people’s perception of the donut as just a sweet treat, so she makes her donuts with brioche dough.
A young Maui filmmaker’s short film on a Wailuku doughnut shop has been named the best documentary in the 2017 My RODE Reel Film Competition. The win by Austin Alimbuyuguen, 20, of Wailuku was announced July 28, with his documentary “Donut Dynamite!” besting 16 other finalists in the international contest run by RODE Microphones of Sydney. His prize includes camera equipment.
Honolulu (KHON2) – Donut enthusiasts can now support local farmers and businesses by satisfying their sweet tooth. Located in the town of Wailuku, on the island of Maui, Donut Dynamite has been getting positive attention for their creative donut flavors.

Looking back on it now, Madame Donut can’t believe she ever thought cooking was a chore. “Growing up, it was something I had to do,” she explained. “Now, it’s not only something I love to do — it’s also who I am.”

Madame Donut of Donut Dynamite in Wailuku topped two other bakers on Tuesday’s episode of the Cooking Channel’s “Donut Showdown” and walked away with a $10,000 prize that she plans to invest in her business.

Last year, a brick and mortar shop had been on her to-do list, after operating out of a pop-up trailer and rotating commercial kitchens for the last couple years.

Calling doughnuts her “preferred canvas” as an artist, a Maui baker’s upcoming appearance on Cooking Channel’s “Donut Showdown” offers her the chance to win $10,000 as well as the opportunity to show the world she can “turn the humble donut into Cinderella.”
